Here are three opportunities that need volunteers.

FIT Prom Dress Collection Drive

Hi, everybody! I am a volunteer at Families in Transition, a non-profit organization that helps get homeless families back on their feet. I volunteer at the thrift store, and it's almost prom season! We are always looking for dresses to sell to the community at a lower price which allows people who may not be able to afford a dress look beautiful at their prom. In addition, all of the money that is made at the thrift store goes towards the organization to help families in the community. Thank you so much!

"Only Yes Means Yes" Event Sign Ups

For our CAS project, we are hosting a speaker to discuss sexual assault on college campuses. The week before the event we will be handing out awareness bracelets and we will be gathering signatures on an "Only Yes Means Yes" sign. We need help with this table during lunches, so we are asking NHS members to sign up for a lunch block. We're holding a maximum of 4 people at the table per block. Peter Woodbury School Family Fun Night volunteers needed!

This year's Family Fun Night theme is S.T.E.A.M.

We need volunteers to help elementary students and their families with projects in each area. We may need volunteers in other areas that night as well (food, activities, and clean up after).

Date: Wednesday, February 15 (snow date 2/16)

Time: Session One 4:00 to 5:30pm
Session Two 6:00 to 7:30 pm

There is no meeting this week, but keep the following items in mind:

• There has been some interest expressed in emails, but it is unclear if we have a single student leader (or pair of leaders) that is going to coordinate with these events
• Dues and contracts are due at the next meeting. If it has been lost, here is a copy of the contract to sign.

Volunteers Needed!

Hi, we are looking for student volunteers to help with this year's Math Counts competition. The competition is from 8:30am - 1:00pm Feb 4th at McKelvie intermediate school (the make up day if there is snow is Feb 11th). No math skills are required! Math Counts is a competition for middle school students, as volunteers we would just be grading the tests, with the help of an answer key, and there will be pizza provided. We did it last year and it was a lot of fun!

It's a thank you card from a family impacted by one of the service projects put together by graduates Megan Pemberton and Anli Zhang for our Week of Service. You can read their project proposal to see what it was all about.

We will begin planning this year's Week of Service soon, so it was a wonderful time to get this reminder that our ideas can have a positive effect on our school and community.

Mark the Next Meeting on your Calendar

Before we head to break, this is a reminder that the next National Honor Society meeting will be on Thursday, January 5, 2017, in the theater at 7:15 am. This meeting is a mandatory meeting for all members.

Join a "Mini-Group"

In addition to a full membership meeting once a month, you will also be responsible for a second meeting in a smaller group. These smaller groups allow us to keep our large body of students organized.

You need to join a mini-group prior to January 5th. Open the Google Spreadsheet and add your name to the group of your choice. Pay attention to when the group meets. If you do not do this yourself prior to the first meeting, the officers and advisers will add you to a group instead.

Ready your Dues

In order to cover the cost of your honor cord, pin, other regalia, and other club costs, each member must pay dues of $20. You may pay via cash or check. If you pay with a check, the check must be made out to Bedford High School. Bring your dues to the January 5th meeting.

If you'd like to get familiar with our hours-logging system now, then review the presentation below for instructions on how to join x2VOL. Our mini-meetings in January will be dedicated to training and clarifying our x2VOL procedures.

Empty Bowls Fundraiser

Hello ,everyone! To quickly reiterate this morning's announcement: for 1 hour of Chapter Service, come support New Horizon's Soup Kitchen and the BHS Art Department on Thursday November 10th from 5:30 to 8. (Reminder we do not have school the next day!) Please reserve your bowl by emailing your first and last name to emptybowlsbhs@gmail.com. Bowls are $10 and soup and bread from local restaurants is included. Additionally, although we appreciate the eager interest in participating in set up or take down for extra hours, this is discouraged as we already have ready and able volunteers. We look forward to seeing you there!

All this pleading, and it looks like two is all we can muster. I will happily be giving these two names to Mr. Sheil, but I'm bummed we could not muster up more volunteers within NHS than the eight that the tech department got not using NHS at all.

November 8th Technology Conference Student volunteers needed

Here are a couple of reminders for the membership as November approaches:

We do not meet this Thursday. This is your Thursday off. Yaaaaay!

We do meet November 3rd. This is the all-membership meeting for the month of November. We will be turning our eyes towards planning induction and reviewing x2VOL.

Speaking of x2VOL, on Tuesday, November 8th, there is event occuring at McKelvie Middle School that needs student volunteers. This is an excellent opportunity to use x2VOL to sign up for a Chapter Service Project. Here are the steps:

1. Log into x2VOL and click "Find Opportunities" 
   
2. Find the opportunity that you want, in this case the BSD Tech Conference, and click "View Event Details"
   
3. Finally, after reviewing the event details and confirming it matches your interests and talents, clock "Sign Up"
   

The technology department has contacted me and let me know that they have 8 students signed up to volunteer from the whole district, and they need our help to fill the other 12 spots. They need to know if they will only have those 8 students to work with. 

Joe Kennedy Event - Democracy in Action

Exclusive event for high school students tomorrow to speak with Congressman Joe Kennedy (from THE Kennedy family). Easy way to get RWL hours, and be able to meet and individually speak with a U.S. elected Congressmen.

Looking for Volunteers for Witch Way to the 5K

Hi everyone! The Witch Way to the 5K, if you haven't heard of it, is a 5K race and kids 1K held every year at Lurgio, and they are looking for volunteers to help out with different things on race day and a few people (~5) to help the night before (Friday Oct. 28th) to stuff goodie bags for the kids 1K and decorate the media center. On race day, they are looking for help supervising pumpkin decorating for the kids (3-4 people) and help at the water stops (~6 people). The race this year is Saturday Oct. 29th. The race day activities would start around 8:30 am, and the Friday night help would be at 3:15 in the Lurgio media center. If you're interested, let me know! 9959412@bedfordnhk12.net. Thank you!
