Looking forward to next year

We received a card recently.
Click to view inside of card

It's a thank you card from a family impacted by one of the service projects put together by graduates Megan Pemberton and Anli Zhang for our Week of Service. You can read their project proposal to see what it was all about.

We will begin planning this year's Week of Service soon, so it was a wonderful time to get this reminder that our ideas can have a positive effect on our school and community.

New Members: To Do List

Mark the Next Meeting on your Calendar

Before we head to break, this is a reminder that the next National Honor Society meeting will be on Thursday, January 5, 2017, in the theater at 7:15 am. This meeting is a mandatory meeting for all members.

Join a "Mini-Group"

In addition to a full membership meeting once a month, you will also be responsible for a second meeting in a smaller group. These smaller groups allow us to keep our large body of students organized.

You need to join a mini-group prior to January 5th. Open the Google Spreadsheet and add your name to the group of your choice. Pay attention to when the group meets. If you do not do this yourself prior to the first meeting, the officers and advisers will add you to a group instead.

Ready your Dues

In order to cover the cost of your honor cord, pin, other regalia, and other club costs, each member must pay dues of $20. You may pay via cash or check. If you pay with a check, the check must be made out to Bedford High School. Bring your dues to the January 5th meeting.

Join x2VOL (Optional)

If you'd like to get familiar with our hours-logging system now, then review the presentation below for instructions on how to join x2VOL. Our mini-meetings in January will be dedicated to training and clarifying our x2VOL procedures.

Join our Facebook Group (Optional)

We predominantly use School Gmail to keep members informed, but Facebook allows an extra layer of interactivity that email does not. You can request to join our private group here.

Hello ,everyone! To quickly reiterate this morning's announcement: for 1 hour of Chapter Service, come support New Horizon's Soup Kitchen and the BHS Art Department on Thursday November 10th from 5:30 to 8. (Reminder we do not have school the next day!) Please reserve your bowl by emailing your first and last name to emptybowlsbhs@gmail.com. Reminder: Full Membership Meeting Tomorrow

If you know that you will not be able to make tomorrow's meeting, make sure you contact your role call officer as soon as possible. Remember that there will be no sign in tomorrow, but rather you should check in with your role call officer before sitting down with your friends. Here is the agenda as it currently stands:

Technology Conference (3rd and Final Call)

All this pleading, and it looks like two is all we can muster. I will happily be giving these two names to Mr. Sheil, but I'm bummed we could not muster up more volunteers within NHS than the eight that the tech department got not using NHS at all.

Do me a favor and complete this quick poll so that I can pass along the feedback to future officers, advisers, and adults looking for volunteers:

Technology Presentation

Hello everyone! I am running the technology presentation for the Future Ready Conference on November 8th. I would love it if we had 3-5 more volunteers to help me do the presentation! It would be in all types of social media so the teachers of Bedford can learn how and why we use them. It would be super easy to talk about and a great way to get hours. Please email me at 9956812@bedfordnhk12.net if you're interested or just come see me!

November 8th Technology Conference Student volunteers needed

Here are a couple of reminders for the membership as November approaches:

We do not meet this Thursday. This is your Thursday off. Yaaaaay!

We do meet November 3rd. This is the all-membership meeting for the month of November. We will be turning our eyes towards planning induction and reviewing x2VOL.

Speaking of x2VOL, on Tuesday, November 8th, there is event occuring at McKelvie Middle School that needs student volunteers. This is an excellent opportunity to use x2VOL to sign up for a Chapter Service Project. Here are the steps:

  1. Log into x2VOL and click "Find Opportunities"
  2. Find the opportunity that you want, in this case the BSD Tech Conference, and click "View Event Details"
  3. Finally, after reviewing the event details and confirming it matches your interests and talents, clock "Sign Up"
The technology department has contacted me and let me know that they have 8 students signed up to volunteer from the whole district, and they need our help to fill the other 12 spots. They need to know if they will only have those 8 students to work with.

Club fair (2nd call) & schedule posted

The NHS bulletin board has been updated with some important information.

While tomorrow's groups will focus on x2VOL training (hopefully), it's expected some members will want to come around to drive up support for their current service opportunities. Please see Sasha's FIT drive and Club Fair sign up.

We currently have 1 member signed up to help with the Club Fair. That would be 0.009% of our total membership. Are we really that busy on Friday?

We will also be establishing role officers for each group tomorrow.

It's time to start making something out of this year!

FIT Donation Drive

Hi everyone, There are three more days for the Household Items Drive that I am holding for Families in Transition! We decided on 30 minutes per item with a 2 hour cap. Please bring some items in to help this nonprofit organization that benefits homeless families in NH and gets them back on their feet. The bin is in the BHS library next to the lost in found, and there is on at the Bedford Public Library as well. High needs items include (all new please): Trash bags, dust pans, shower curtain rings, magic erasers, laundry detergent, dish soap, paper towels, toilet paper. You can sign off on this google doc so that I can keep track of items:

Sorting hat has spoken

If you're in the following Mini-Groups, see you this Thursday in the assigned rooms below:

Saturday, October 8, 2016

Another sign-up. Yuck. (Club Fair)

We'd love to focus on one thing at a time, but quick turnaround is needed on this one. The BHS Club Fair is Friday during S3. We need help setting up, breaking down, and hosting the event in the gym.

This is Chapter Service or an ISP opportunity for those interested in event planning, education, or community relations.

Here is the sign up:

(Hey, mini-group sign up is going well. Keep self-sorting. Try to keep groups under 16 a piece.)

Mini Group Sign Up (Call #2)

Some quick math says that some 40 NHS members have not signed up for a mini-group yet. Please do so before Tuesday morning. Otherwise, you'll just be put wherever the sorting hat puts you.

Each group needs about 15 members -- It'd be great for you to sort yourselves.

Mini Group Sign Up

Please sign up for the mini-group you would like to be in by the end of the day Friday, October 7th.

Group 1s will meet on the second Thursday of each month. Their first meeting will be October 13th.

Group 2s will meet on the third Thursday of each month. Their first meeting will be on October 20th.

Character, service, scholarship, and leadership are just names and do not impact what you will be doing. So, feel free to pick your group to get the schedule you want and be with the friends that you want. Groups do need to be evenly dispersed as best we can.

Thanks!

Adaptive Soccer Looking for Volunteers

Hi, Everyone! I have been participating in an Adaptive Soccer Program as a buddy, to help children with disabilities play soccer since Freshman Year. We have significantly fewer volunteers this year. We are looking for volunteers to help with this great program. You do not need to be a soccer player to do this, you just need to know the basic skills. We have practices every Wednesday night 5:30-6:15 pm and games at 12 noon to 12:45pm on Saturdays at the field behind the SAU building. You do not have to attend all games or practices. Any time you can give would be greatly appreciated. If you are interested please contact me and I will give you the information to contact the Program Coordinator. My email is 9955247@bedfordnhk12.net. Thanks!

Fixes to tech opp announcement

I forgot to link the Google Doc in the project overview. Just to review, there are two opportunities coming November 8th:

  • Tech "guides": Just being good hosts, no tech knowledge needed. Anyone can sign up in the Google Doc.
  • Tech "presenters": This is a bit more unique and requires emailing Mr. Ahnert so he can set you up with Mr. Sheil. Basically, we want a few high schoolers to teach some Bedford teachers about apps that are popular with you guys so we can incorporate the language of them into our relationships with you.

Unique Technology Integration Service Hour Opportunities

Mark your calendar for November (NOVEMBER!?) 8th. Not only is that the date of the 2016 election, but it is also the first ever Bedford School District Future Ready Conference. The technology integration department really wants to get students involved, and they are coming to our National Honor Society first. There are two ways to get involved and earn hours:

Student Conference Assistants
Personnel Needs
50
Description
A large team of students is needed to help the technology department manage classroom equipment and assist presenters with set up and takedown. Advanced technology experience is not needed.
Chapter Project?
Yes
Individual Service Interest Area(s)
Public Relations, Technology, Education, Event Planning, Collaboration, Leadership
Hours Provided
1 - 6
Contact
Add your name to Chapter Project sign up

Student Conference Presenters
Personnel Needs
2 - 5
Description
National Honor Society has a speaking slot at the conference! This is a resume/college app builder for sure. Mr. Ahnert and the tech team worked together to create this session for teachers:

App Culture: So, what ARE we doing on our phone?
For High School Teachers
Volunteer students from the National Honor Society will give a guided "tour" of popular apps on the smartphones of today's student. Actual content subject to change (session running will be contingent on getting interest from NHS members in the Fall), but it is expected that Instagram and Snapchat will be highlighted by the student presenters. The focus of the workshop will not be to use the apps in the classroom, but to give teachers knowledge and vocabulary about technology that is important to students today.

So, we have the spot, but we need the students!
Chapter Project?
Yes
Individual Service Interest Area(s)
Public Speaking,  Technology, Education, Collaboration, Leadership, Risk Taking
Hours Provided
1 (Plus all your prep time)
Contact
Email Mr. Ahnert directly so he can put a team together that can work with Mr. Sheil or if you have more questions about what putting this presentation will ask of you.

What makes these really different and special is that this is a day that is normally closed to students. You will get to see what your teachers do on those mysterious days where we have school and you don't. What's more, you're being given a chance to teach us how to integrate technology better in our future classroom.

Taking part in these opportunities means taking part in the future of the Bedford School District, and that's cool!

If you have any interest in being on the student presenter team, please let me know. If we don't get any student interest, we'll have to take our conference session off the schedule. I know the tech teachers are really excited to have you. It would be a neat achievement by our district to have students be a part of our workshops.

Unfortunately, I had to cap the sign-ups at 50 based on numbers I had discussed with Mr. Dempsey, so not everyone was able to get a spot. The BHS Relay for Life event is almost here!

Hi everyone! Our Relay for Life event here at BHS is almost here, so there are a couple of hour earning opportunities coming up: On May 10th, there will be a Coaches vs. Cancer event during our home track meet that we need kids' help running a Relay Table. This will be very similar to Week of Service. Shifts will be an hour long and will run from 3:30 to 6:30. On May 20th we have the actual Relay event! It will be taking place in the gym from 6:00p.m. to 10:00p.m. NHS will be having a team that you could join, or you and a group of friends could start your own team. There will be music, activities, and food, so it will be a really fun way to earn some hours and support cancer research! You can come for as little or as long as you want.

 Sign up here: http://bit.ly/1TtijGr

If you can't participate, but would still like to support the fight against cancer, you can donate. For every $25 you donate, you can earn 1 hour of service. Anyone who is interested in these opportunities and/or wants further information can contact Kenzie Kearns, Ricky Salvatore, Elise Gautheir, or Mrs. Woods (in the academic center).

Class of 2017... Welcome back; there's work to do.

  1. Does anybody want to lead a teacher appreciation event Tuesday? Typically NHS does something to make the BHS teachers' week special. The PTG has offered up Tuesday for us. My suggestion would be to do an early morning decoration of the three teacher offices, but if someone has a different surprise they'd like to pull off, I'll turn it over to you. I don't need to be part of the planning (I am a teacher after all), but let me know so I can tell the PTG that something is happening on Tuesday. If you need adult help, I can connect you to them.
  2. There's a mandatory meeting for Juniors this Thursday. If there are Seniors still getting these announcements, you can, of course, come for a meeting credit, but there will be nothing on the agenda concerning you. It's a good way to flag me down for signatures, however.
  3. Only about 8 weeks to go. Whoa!

Week of Service in Conclusion

That's it!

With the celebration concluded, that's it! Week of Service celebration, done. Over 1,500 hours of volunteer effort was given; hopefully, you checked out the white board of thanks in the library today.

The Juniors will reflect on the event and decide what we try for next year, but for Seniors, that was the end of your NHS experience. All hours and meetings are due Friday, May 6th.

Members who were able to make Saturday's event received a commemorative T-shirt.

These will live in my advisory room (Mr. Dempsey's office). If you didn't get yours and you would like one, stop by during advisory and pick one up. Only stop by advisory hours so that I can check you off accurately.

And with that, Seniors, I am removing you from NHS updates. You will no longer get blog posts in your email or texts from Remind. You may hear from me individually regarding your membership status, but other than that. You're done!

Get your hours in.

May 6th.

Do it.

Thanks for the ride Seniors, it's been meant a pretty b16 deal to me.

5 Important Midweek Announcements

  1. You are getting noticed. As I've mentioned to many of you, it's hard for me to be everywhere at once. But, I am starting to get teachers and administrators like Mrs. Magnusson, Sra. Sarsfield, Dean Blaney, and Mr. Jozokos checking in with me and telling me that you guys are everywhere and doing great. It's a lot of time and energy, but Juniors, you are molding our chapter with your vision, and Seniors, you are going out with a memorable bang. Awesome, thank you.
  2. RSVP for Saturday. Check your Schoogle account and RSVP to our Saturday party. When we started planning, wasn't sure if Saturday was going to work, and now it appears that I have 450 slices of pizza ordered for 13 students. I hope you're hungry! In all seriousness, I really hope you can come. We'll be done by 8, promise.
  3. Tomorrow's meet-up is half hour earlier. If you want breakfast snacks and a meeting credit, tomorrow's meet-up is 7am - 7:30am. There's donut holes, granola bars, fruit, and orange juice. Say hello.
  4. Update our scoreboard. Project leaders, upload how many hours BHS students have contributed to your event today. That spreadsheet is here.
  5. Sign-up for State Spring Conference. This is a reminder that you must decide by Thursday if you want to join NHS on a field trip to Colby-Sawyer on Friday, May 20th. RSVP here.

Peer Tutoring Update

For all of you who signed up to help out with the peer tutoring project, thanks so much! So you know where to meet, here are the classrooms where you can meet with your groups:

  • Mme. Noble's french class: room 303
  • Mrs. Hinz's math class: room 347
  • Mrs. Sarsfield's Spanish class: room 321
  • Mrs. Magnusson's In Writing class: room 121

We currently have no volunteers for Mrs. Hinz's math modeling class which is a problem since I will have to tell her by tomorrow that we have to cancel, and I really hope we will not have to do that! I know math doesn't sound like fun but Mrs. Hinz promised it would be easy work that day and I really need your help, so please sign up!!!

Also, we only have one student coming in for the Wednesday R4 and Thursday R2 french classes, so please sign up for those! Of course, we could use more volunteers in other classes as well, but these are the classes where we are most desperate.

Thanks, guys!

To get your hours, click on the links below for the classes you volunteered in. Your hours can count for either peer tutoring or chapter service hours, but not both. Just write your name in the respective sheet to get your hours!

If you did not sell the stars that you took please return them to the bag within a ziplock bag with your name on it. Also, for those who haven't specifically signed their name on the chapter service sheet that is now in the bag, could you do so? I would like to submit the chapter sheet by Wednesday to ensure that Seniors get their hours. Thank you!

Part of our job as the leaders of this week is to generate interest and excitement. If we believe this week is a fun and important thing to do, it will become one. Feel free the snap, insta, and tweet what you're doing this week and #NHSWOS it up.

I got a neat opportunity to share my thoughts with Unleashed this evening, and I was asked to share how I perceived the event so far. I thought it would be interesting for you to hear what I had to say. My honest answer follows:

How have you perceived student reactions so far? (In terms of preparation, volunteer involvement or anything else)
My perception right now is that the students who want to make something out of this event are the ones getting the most out of it. Since we've never done it before, I'm asking for a lot of trust from students as I promise that this will be worth our time. So, students that have taken on project ideas or helped with the website or schedule are the ones that are feeling the most fulfilled right now by what they are accomplishing (albeit stressed). But, there is a significant portion of our membership that is still waiting to see if it's worth their time and my hope is that by celebration time on Saturday, they will have found a way to get involved and feel that their membership has been validated.

My other concern is that with so many projects demanding student volunteers, we may be stretched a bit thin. However, I remind myself that we have only 12 events planned while we have over 100 Juniors and over 90 Seniors to help. Even if every current member chose only 1 of the 12 events to be a part of, we'd still have nearly 10 students per project to get the job done! It's going to come down to a commitment to the cause on an individual basis. I hope Juniors are planning to make a great first impression, and I hope Seniors are planning to go out on a real high note. It's going to take all of us!

In short, we're the ones in control of our success or failure. I'm pretty excited about it.

Relay for Life Sign Up

Every day during block 3 over the Week of Service, Relay for Life will have a table set up in bulldog corner where Relay for Life Suns and Moons will be sold. These are a similar concept to the Make-A-Wish stars. As the week goes on, suns and moons will be sold and hung in Bulldog Corner to make a "Wall of Hope". The goal of this event is to gain more awareness for the Relay for Life Event. Relay for Life is a subdivision of the American Cancer Society, a non-profit organization that helps fund cancer research. By purchasing a sun or moon, you can help the fight against cancer. We need people to run this table throughout the week. You can sign up for as many or as few slots as you want, and hours will be given out for the amount of time that you work. If you know friends who are not in NHS, but would like to contribute their time, feel free to pass this sign up on to them! Let's have a great Week of Service! :)

Historian Update

Hello everyone! As I mentioned during our mandatory meeting, I am still in need for pictures for our end of the year celebration. If you have any photos that were taking during an chapter or individual service opportunity, please send them to me. I want to create a slideshow that incorporates various members and events that have occurred throughout the year, and so far I haven't received very many. So please send them to me as soon as possible, thank you! :) Email: 9957470@bedfordnhk12.net

BHS McDonough Book Drive

BHS is hosting a CAS book drive for McDonough School in Manchester during the week of April 11th to the 15th and donations from members would be wonderful!!! Any NHS member who donates 3 or more books can receive 30 minutes of NHS individual service. Also, we are looking for 3-4 students who are interested in coming to McDonough school during the 4th block of April 15th to help read to a 1st grade class. Students are required to have their own transportation to the school (ie they own a car and have it with them at school). Please contact William Ebert at 9955507@bedfordnhk12.net or William Ebert in person to let us know if you are interested or would like more information. Thanks!!!!

1000 Paper Cranes Lunch Sign Up

Hello! We are running a service project for Week of Service called 1000 Paper Cranes. There is an Asian folk story that says that if you fold 1000 origami paper cranes, you will get a wish. Often, this wish is used for good health or good fortune, so for this project, we are going to set up a table in Bulldog Corner during lunches throughout the week, where people can come to help fold paper cranes. We will aim to fold as many paper cranes as possible, and then on Saturday 4/16, we will deliver them to the Elliot Hospital in Manchester to decorate the main lobby and wish the patients good health! While experience folding paper cranes is helpful, we will have directions available, and we can teach anyone who would like to learn in person. Attached is the sign-up form for lunches--just fill out your name in the lunch block(s) you would like to help out! Thanks!

Go Through the Motions of Promotions

Our schedule is now up in five places around the school:

  • Across from the main office
  • Across from our bulletin board
  • Across from the Commons
  • 2nd floor stairwell
  • Across from 3rd floor teacher offices
Lookin' Official
You can bring exposure to your event, and add to the visual appeal of our schedule, by posting any approved flyers you have right on the border of the big poster (like "NEXT WEEK" is above). This will add to the sense that something is happening... in 6 days.

It's Happening!!

I am very excited. I am very stressed. I am very excited.

The Week of Service begins in 8 Days!

Website

You know how I know the exact day count? Check out this laser hot website made by our own Natalie Kelley: It has a super awesome, super scary countdown right in the corner!

http://tinyurl.com/nhswos

This is the URL we'll start throwing around the building as non-NHS students start to wonder how they can get involved in our event.

If you're a project leader who would like to get more info on to our website, or if you would like to get involved with helping build the website, please email Natalie.

Schedule

Our master schedule continues to look ice cool. (Look, I don't know, I just try to make these fun and worth your time.) Please double check Molly's awesome work one more time:

I'd like to print this schedule fourth block tomorrow on poster sized paper, so there's only a little time left to get this right. If we've accidentally coded your group's activity with a different membership restriction, there's only so much time left to let Molly know!

8 Days

Peer Tutoring Project Update

For the peer tutoring project mentioned in the last post, we have added a new opportunity to come to Mrs. Magnusson's In Writing class during R1 on Tuesday the 12th. You can sign up for this using the link to the google doc in the previous post. Also, the date for peer tutoring in Mme. Noble's classes has changed. The Wednesday S3 and S4 opportunities will stay the same, but Mme. Noble has requested to move the R2 class to Thursday the 14th, not Tuesday.

Please sign up!

Peer Tutoring Opportunities for the Week of Service

Hi, guys!

For a week of service project I am organizing some peer tutoring opportunities that you can sign up for to help out in other class rooms during the day.

The events that I have planned so far include:

  • helping Mrs. Hinz's Math Modeling class during the S2 block on Wednesday the 13th,
  • and helping Mme. Noble's French III class for blocks 3 and 4 on that same day.
  • You can also sign up for peer editing in Mrs. Sarsfield's spanish classes on R3 and R4 blocks on Tuesday the 12th,
  • as well as another opportunity to go to to Mme. Noble's class during R2 of that Tuesday.
There are more requests coming in from teachers, so I will keep you up to date when we finalize those plans. If you have a free block during any of these times, please come in to help! We need as many volunteers as we can get because the program cannot work without you guys!

If you are planning to help out, please type your name in this Google doc for the classes that you will be participating in so I can give you credit for your hours. Thanks!
